CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE
TRAV
“DYLAN, WHAT’S WRONG?” She startled from my voice but didn’t answer or take her eyes off Chris as she continued to stride in his direction.
My fingers dug into her lower back and I wasn’t sure if it was fear for her or myself causing the reaction. Dread began to weigh my blood, growing infinitely heavier when I looked down the corridor and saw a dark-featured man with glasses waiting in Chris’ office.
Our eyes locked and didn’t waver as I spoke to Dylan. “Baby, who’s that?”
Her gasp cut through the air when she turned her head in the direction I continued to glare. The guy flicked his calculating gaze from me to her, and the subtle incline of his head was enough to let me know they already knew each other.
Ignoring Chris, I turned Dylan by the shoulders to face me and held her in place. “Who is he?”
“Someone I hoped not to see so soon,” she whispered, her eyes swimming with a thousand emotions that speared through me.
Not caring that our boss bore witness to our actions, I cupped Dylan’s face and shook her a little to emphasise my point. “What the hell are you keeping from me?”
The crease between her eyebrows deepened and her brows tilted as if she was about to cry. “This isn’t about you, Travis!”
Chris’ hands landed on both our shoulders and shoved us towards his office. “Time to take this behind closed doors.”
I glared at the stranger while Chris continued to propel Dylan and I down the corridor. As he kicked the door shut behind us, the guy parked his ass on the edge of Chris’ desk and eyed me up and down. I didn’t like the vibe he was giving off.
“Someone tell me what the fuck is going on!” I demanded.
He leaned forward and offered his hand. “Maxwell. I’m Dylan’s automotive mechanic instructor. I’m here to talk about her grades.”
I accepted his hand shake and noted that his hands didn’t feel like those of a man who did manual labour.
“Trav,” I snapped.
The moment we unclasped hands, I turned to Dylan. Her eyes flicked from Maxwell to me then grew round at my next question. “I thought you’d been mechanicing for years, and not under training?”
Dylan hesitated a beat before Maxwell spoke for her. “She’s top of the class.”
Narrowing my eyes, I studied her as if viewing her for the first time all over again; short white-blonde hair, thick dark lashes that contrasted with her light blue-grey contacts, and her lean height. However, it wasn’t her physical attributes that made me doubt Maxwell’s theory; it was the way she held herself. Usually Dylan stood tall as if she would take you by the balls at any given moment and throw you through a window. But now, her shoulders sagged and I had lost count of the amount of times she had swallowed and shook her head.
I pointed between her, Maxwell and Chris. “I call bullshit on this entire mind fuck. Have your little meeting, then, Dylan.
